Mera Peak Climbing
An 18 day journey to the top of the highest trekking peak in Nepal!

Have you ever wanted to climb a mountain? How about a magnificent mountain in the beautiful Himalayas? Mera Peak is the perfect climb as it doesn’t require any technical equipment, yet offers some of the most amazing views of the highest mountains in the world, including Mt. Everest. Nestled in the eastern part of Nepal, Mera Peak rises to an elevation of 6,461 meters (21,190 ft.). It is called “a trekking peak” in Nepal because it doesn’t need any special to reach the top. While it is certainly challenging, it is something the average trekker can do.

From its snowcapped summit, from Mera Peak one can see five of the 8000+ meter peaks in the world.  There are only 14 mountain peaks over 8,000 meters tall and five are right here to see.  You have a wonderful view of Mt. Everest, the world’s tallest mountain. But also visible are Kanchenjunga (3rd highest), Lhotse (4th highest), Makalu (5th highest) and Oyo-Cho (6th highest). From its lofty heights, you can behold the stunning beauty of the full majesty of the massive Himalayas. This is an 18 day trek and climb. Most of the time we stay in tea houses, but there will be a few days of camping as we make our way from base camp up to the summit. Before we go, you will be taught the basics of mountain climbing by your Sherpa guide. So why not see the Himalayas from on top of a mountain? Mera Peak is the perfect mountain to climb. Trip itinerary:

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN KATHMANDU (elev. 1350 m/4,429 ft.)
Even before your plane touches down at Tribhuvan International Airport, you are looking down at the snowcapped peaks of the Himalayas. Kathmandu is located right next to the mighty mountains that appear to touch the bright blue Himalayan sky. Your plane lands and you make your way through the airport. Once you’ve got your Nepal visa and grabbed your luggage, you’re out the door where you will meet your friends from Summit International Travels & Tours. They’ve come to give you a Nepali greeting and take you to your hotel to rest up from your long flight to this magical land.

DAY 2 – TOURING THE KATHMANDU VALLEY
The morning is a time for sightseeing as you explore two of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are home to the Kathmandu Valley. You get to choose the seven you want to visit. After lunch, meet at the office of Summit International Travels & Tours for time of climbing preparation. Equipment will be checked, and there will be time for instruction on how to be a successful climber. Even though Mera Peak is a trekking peak, it still will require some skills that you will have the opportunity to learn. After the time of lessons, it’s off to a welcome dinner where you will meet your trekking/climbing guide. The dinner will include wonderful Nepali cuisine as well as a cultural program to enjoy.

DAY 3 – FLY TO LUKLA, TREK TO PAIYA (CHUTOK) (elev. 2,730 m/8,956 ft.)
We rise in anticipation of today’s adventure as we travel to the domestic airport in Kathmandu to fly to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. It’s a 40 minute flight over the very backbone of the Himalayas as you gaze down at the awesome snowcapped peaks.
We land at Lukla, grab our gear and begin our trek to the village of Paiya. We actually drop down in elevation for a ways as we trek through dense forest jungles. The trail will rise as we cross some low mountain passes to reach the village of Paiya (a/k/a Chutok). It’s about  5- 6 hours of trekking to reach Paiya. Here we stay at a local guest house.

DAY 4 – TREK TO PANGGOM (elev. 2846 m/9,337 ft.)
The trail is narrow as it first descends through the dense forests of rhododendron and bamboo. Below us will be the beautiful Dudh Koshi River Valley. The Dudh Koshi (means “Milk River” is white in color and races angrily over the rocks from its source high up in the glacial peaks. The local people make their living by subsistence farming as well as trading. We will trek 5 – 6 hours today to reach our destination of Panggom where we will spend the night at a local guest house.

DAY 5 – TREK TO NINGSOW (elev. 2,863 m/9,393 ft.)
As you are discovering, there is nothing level about Nepal. Everything is up and down as you cross ridges and mountain passes. Today we cross Panggom La Pass (La is the Nepali word for “pass”) These passes offer wonderful views of the high Himalayas. While you will be impressed, be assured you will be even more impressed in the days to come. We reach the village of Ningsow in around 4 – 5 hours where we spend the night at a local guest house.

DAY 6 – TREK TO CHHATRA KHOLA (elev. 2,800 m/9,186 ft.)
Today we get to see great views of Mera Peak. Our destination now becomes visible as we walk along the trail. Here we enter Makalu Barun National Park.  These forests are filled with all kinds of wildlife, including monkeys that chatter in the trees as well as the endangered red panda. Don’t count on seeing the red panda – they tend to be nocturnal creatures. If you are lucky enough to see one, you will enjoy watching them at play. Some of the local farmers that grow coffee aren’t too fond of them as they like to eat the coffee beans right off the trees. This might explain why they are nocturnal! Anyway, we reach Chhatra Khola after trekking 7 – 8 hours to stay in a local guest house.

DAY 7 – TREK TO KOTHE (elev. 3,691 m/12,109 ft.)
Chhatra Khola is the gateway to Mera Peak. It’s here we pick up the main trail. We follow the Hinku Khola as the trail climbs upwards. For the last few days, we haven’t gained much in elevation, but today we definitely do. We trek around 6 – 7 hours to reach our guest house at Kothe village. These are small villages. Accommodations are basic, but the food is hot and delicious.

DAY 8 – TREK TO THAKNAK (elev. 4,358 m/14,297 ft.)
Mera Peak is much closer today and at times, it casts a shadow over the trail. We are rising in elevation. There are some ancient Buddhist monasteries in this area, including Lungsumgba Gompa which is over 2 centuries old. We see mani walls, where the Sherpas have carved Buddhist scriptures onto the rocks. We reach Thaknak which is a summer grazing area. The shops and tea houses are open seasonally, catering to the Sherpa herders that graze their flocks here in the summer pastures.  It is a shorter day at 3 – 4 hours at this higher elevation.

DAY 9 – TREK TO KHARE (elev. 5,045 m/16,486 ft.)
We are now well above the tree line at this high elevtion, and we are climbing higher. The lack of trees offer spectacular views of the mountains in this area. We cross the moraines and trek along the glaciers. It’s colder up here, so we’re glad we brought warm jackets. We can see the northern face of Mera Peak today. We trek just 2 – 3 hours, allowing ourselves time for our bodies to adjust to the higher elevations. We will spend two nights here in Khare.

DAY 10 – ACCLIMATIZATION DAY
We had a demonstration of climbing in Kathmandu; today we have some additional training. We learn how to use an ice axe and harness as well as climbing boots and crampons. We do use a rope in our quest for the top and we will learn the best ways to do this. We also stay a second night because we need to allow our bodies to adjust to the thinner mountain air. AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is a real problem at the high elevations of the Himalayas as Summit International Travels & Tours takes this condition very seriously. AMS can be fatal if not treated properly. The best way to prevent it is to allow the body to adjust for 24 hours at a high altitude. We will enjoy a hot meal and a second night here at Khare.

DAY 11 – TREK TO MERA PEAK HIGH CAMP (elev. 5,780 m/18,958 ft.)
It’s a day of challenging climbing to reach Mera Peak High Camp. First we have to reach Mera Peak Base Camp which is a steep trail. We cross Mera La Pass and only then do we reach Mera Peak High Camp. It takes us 6 – 7 hours to reach the camp. Tonight we camp under the beautiful starry Himalayan skies. It is cold and snowy up here, and the hot meal will be a most welcome event. We look about us before the sun goes down to see Mt. Everest and the other amazing peaks of the eastern Himalayas. We no doubt turn in early in anticipation of the summit tomorrow.

DAY 12 – MERA PEAK SUMMIT (elev. 6,461 m/21,190 ft.)
We rise very early today as we are up before sunrise. We grab a hot breakfast in the early morning before we start our climb. We start early to behold the most magnificent Himalayan sunrise over these amazing peaks. The peaks appear to be grey, then suddenly the first rays of the effulgent sun shoots above the mountain peaks. All of the peaks glow, changing from grey to red and finally they become a brilliant white! The sight is truly dazzling.
We move slowly as we take the route to the summit. The final ascent will require us to use ropes to reach the summit. Once we have reached the summit, it is time to stand and gaze in wonder at the mountain peaks that we can see. And we can see peaks! Rising all around us in a 360° circumference are the peaks of:

  • Mt. Everest (8,848 m/29,029 ft.)
  • Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m/28,169 ft.)
  • Mt. Lhotse (elev. 8,516 m/27,940 ft.)
  • Mt. Makalu (elev. 8,463 m/27,766 ft.)
  • Mt. Cho Oyu (elev. 8,1,88 m/26,864 ft.)
  • Mt. Nuptse (elev. 7,855 m/25,771 ft.)
  • Mt. Chamlang (elev. 7,319 m/24,012 ft.)
  • Mt. Baruntse (elev. 7,129 m/23,389 ft.)

We admire the views, and then make our way back down the mountain to reach our tea house at Khare. It’s a long day, 7 – 9 hours.

DAY 13 – REST DAY
When it comes to weather, you can’t guarantee anything in the Himalayas except that it is unpredictable. If we get some inclement weather, then we havebuilt in an extra day as a precaution. Otherwise, we can simply rest today. It’s been a strenuous, but fun climb. Today celebrate your ascension of Mera Peak.

DAY 14 – TREK TO KOTHE (elev. 3600 m/11,808 ft.)
Khare is rather spartan, but Kothe is a wonderful place to spend the night. The village is known for its local wines that you can sample along with lots of special foods. We trek 4 – 5 hours to reach Kothe, staying a guest house for the night.

DAY 15 – TREK TO THULI KHARKA (elev. 4,300 m/14,107 ft.)
It’s a steep trail to reach Thuli Kharka. Kharka is a grazing area of the high Himalayas. We will spend the night at the kharka after trekking 5 – 6 hours.

DAY 16 – TREK TO LUKLA
This is our last day of trekking as we make our way to the airport at Lukla. We cross Zatrwa La Pass (elev. 4600 m/15,092 ft.) where we see the final outstanding views of the highest mountains int eh world. We drop down to reach Lukla where we can enjoy a good dinner at a guest house for our final night in the area.

DAY 17 – FLY TO KATHMANDU
We rise early and take the return flight to Kathmandu. The 40 minute flight is truly enjoyable as we make our way back to the magical city of Kathmandu. Once we land, we travel to our hotel for a hot shower and rest. It’s a free day, where you can do whatever you like. Go sightseeing (on your own), souvenir shopping or just sit in your roof garden and read a good book. It’s a good day to rest up from your climb. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner with your guide and fellow climbers as you celebrate a successful climb to the summit of Mera Peak.

DAY 18 – DEPARTURE
This day has finally arrived as you prepare to leave for the airport and fly to your next destination. It’s a bittersweet day as you really don’t want to leave.
