Detailed Itinerary:

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN KATHMANDU (elev. 1350 m/4,429 ft.)
The landing gear of your plane has extended and is now preparing to land. From your seat you can see the beautiful Himalayas as the plane lands at Tribhuvan International Airport in the magical city of Kathmandu. You meet your friends here from Summit International Tours & Travel who take you by private vehicle to your hotel where you can relax from your long flight.

DAY 2 – SIGHTSEEING IN KATHMANDU VALLEY
Your city guide picks you up today at your hotel in a private vehicle as your cultural journey into the amazing culture of Nepal begins. Kathmandu is a magical place steeped in history, culture and religion. It is home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We will visit four today which will give you a good appreciation of the amazing culture you will find in Nepal. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner where you will meet your guide as you prepare for your journey tomorrow into the Khumbu region.

DAY 3 – FLY TO LUKLA, TREK TO PHAKDING (elev. 2,652 m/8700 ft.)
You’re excited this morning as you wake up ready for the early morning flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest/Khumbu region. After breakfast, your guide picks you up in a private vehicle and takes you to the domestic airport to board the 40 minute flight to Lukla. The flight itself is magnificent as you fly over the very backbone of the snowcapped Himalayas.

At Lukla, we collect our backpacks and begin to make our way to the village of Phakding. We spend four hours trekking through beautiful jungle and along the Dudh Koshi River that froths over the rocks and rapids. Phakding is a pleasant Sherpa village where you will spend the night.

DAY 4 – TREK TO NAMCHE BAZAAR (elev. 3440 m/11,283 ft.)
Today we enter Sagarmatha National Park as we have our permits checked by the friendly rangers there. The journey rises significantly in elevation as we make our way to the ancient Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar. Built into the side of a hill like an amphitheater, the village is made of ancient stones colorfully painted in bright colors. We pass through dense jungles and past waterfalls to reach Namche Bazaar. All along the way are amazing views of the mountains, including your first truly fine glimpse of Mt. Everest.

DAY 5 – ACCLIMATIZATION DAY
The Island Peak Climb with EBC is a high altitude trek/climb, and it is necessary to take acclimatization days in order to allow our bodies to adjust to the thinner mountain air. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a serious problem and can be fatal if not attended to. The best treatment is to allow the body a day to adjust to the lower oxygen levels. Today is not a day of just sitting around. We will walk to the top of the hill for a fabulous view of Mt. Everest. There will be time to explore Namche Bazaar with its wonderful shops, restaurants and bakeries.

DAY 6 – TREK TO TENGBOCHE (elev. 3,867 m/12,684 ft.)
We return to trekking today as we make our way to Tengboche. The trail today is easy in places, and then becomes rather steep until we reach the famous Tengboche Buddhist Monastery which features Mt. Everest for a background. You, too will want to stop and meditate, gazing upon the incredible natural beauty of the world’s highest mountain. We will spend the night at a local lodge in this wonderfully quaint village.

DAY 7 – TREK TO PHERICHE (elev. 4,240 m/13,910 ft.)
The morning trek goes downhill to the river as we enter into lush, dense forests. We descend into the valley, and once we cross the river we make our way upwards to the village of Pangboche. It’s a picturesque little Sherpa village in the heart of the Khumbu. From here, we move northwards through a valley where we are treated to more magical views of Mt. Everest and several other peaks. Our destination is the lovely village of Pheriche which is located in a valley. Here we will spend the night at a local guest house. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours.
DAY 8 – SEC0ND ACCLIMATIZATION DAY
We’ve crossed to new heights, and it requires us to allow the body further time to adjust. We are above the 4,000 meter mark and the air is even thinner up here. We will hike to the top of the ridge for an excellent view of the snowcapped peaks as well as walk around Pheriche where we can take tea with the local Sherpas.

DAY 9 – TREK TO LOBUCHE (elev. 4,928 m/16,164 ft.)
The villages here become fewer and fewer and the farms are mostly buckwheat and potatoes. We’ve left the forests behind us as we’re now above the tree line. Our destination is Lobuche, a remote but pretty little village where we will spend the night at a guest house. Trekking time is 4 – 5 hours.

DAY 10 – TREK TO GOREKSHEP, VISIT TO EBC (elev. 5,364 m/17,598 ft.)
Today you will reach Everest Base Camp (EBC). We ascend more today to reach Gorekshep where we will drop our backpacks for the night. We leave our backpacks here as we make our way to EBC. We are walking the same trail that Hillary and Norgay walked on that historic climb in 1953. Return to the tea house at Gorakshep to spend the night.

DAY 11 – CLIMB MT. KALAPATHAR, TREK BACK TO LOBUCHE (elev. 4,928 m/16,164 ft.)
We climb two mountains on this trip. The first is the trekking peak of Mt. Kalapathar (elev. 5,643 m/18,513 ft.) which features incredible views of Mt. Everest. It’s a popular peak to climb on any trip to EBC, and it only takes around two hours to get to the top. Enjoy the view, then return to Gorakshep to pick up your backpack and then trek to Lobuche where we will spend the night. Trekking time today is 7 – 8 hours.

DAY 12 – TREK TO CHHUKUNG (elev. 4,730 m/15,518 ft.)
We walk eastward today into the Chhukung Valley with its beautiful mountain views. Our destination is the lodge at Chhukung where we will meet our climbing guide. Mt. Kalapathar was easy; Island Peak will require more work. Here we get our climbing equipment as well as learn more about how to climb. It will be our last night in a tea house for a few days as tomorrow starts the camping part of the trip. Trekking time is 3 – 4 hours.

DAY 13 – TREK TO ISLAND PEAK BASE CAMP (elev. 5,200 m/17,060 ft.)
We leave our guest house, traveling through the valley and then upwards over the Imja and Lhotse glacier morraines to reach Island Peak Base Camp. Here we will set up camp in the wonderfully fresh mountain air. There will be a one hour training class for first time climbers by our climbing guide. Trekking time is 3 – 4 hours.

DAY 14 – CLIMB TO ISLAND PEAK HIGH CAMP (elev. 5,600 m/18,372 ft.)
We rise to the smell of our cook making us a hot breakfast. Sipping our tea (or coffee), we gaze around us at the beauty of the Khumbu region. We strap crampons onto our boots as we start the climbing part of our journey. It takes us around 2 – 3 hours to reach Island Peak High Camp where we will our last night camping. The night air is crisp and cold, and the stars above us is a myriad of beauty which forms the most impressive canopy above our tents.

DAY 15 – REACH THE PEAK OF ISLAND PEAK, THEN BACK TO CHHUKUNG
Today we reach our destination: the summit of Island Peak. We rise to the elevation of 6,189 m/20,305 ft. From here, we gaze in a 360° direction, seeing peak after magnificent peak of beauty. We climb with ropes to reach the top as the ascent is around 40° - 45°. After enjoying the view and taking pictures, we start our descent, which takes us back to Chhukung where there is a hot shower waiting for us.

DAY 16 – TREK TO KHUMJUNG (elev. 3,780 m/12,402 ft.)
We are quickly dropping in elevation, returning back to wonderful forest of pine and rhododendron. The trail drops into the valley, crosses a long suspension bridge and makes its way to the little village of Khumjung where we will spend the night. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours.

DAY 17 – TERK TO NAMCHE BAZAAR (elev. 3,440 m/11,283 ft.)
We reach what will feel like an old friend: The Village of Namche Bazaar. We arrive feeling like conquerors, having climbed two mountains on this trip since leaving this village. We will have time to explore more around the village, even having the opportunity to pick up some local handcrafted souvenirs as we will spend the night here. Trekking time is 5 – 6 hours.

DAY 18 – TREK TO LUKLA (elev. 2,652 m/8,700 ft.)
Today is a long day as we make our way back to Lukla. We will leave the park, passing back along the trail and through the dense forests with its wildflowers and waterfalls. We reach Lukla after trekking for 7 – 8 hours where we spend our final night on the trail.

DAY 19 – FLY TO KATHMANDU
It’s a morning flight as we board our plane to take us over the backbone of the Himalayas. We arrive 40 minutes later in Kathmandu where our car is ready to receive us and take us to our hotel for a time to relax.

DAY 20 – FREE DAY
The weather in the mountains can be unpredictable at times. We schedule on our trips an extra day in case we are delayed in flying out of Lukla on Day 19. Today, if the weather cooperates, you can enjoy just resting in a rooftop garden at your hotel, or exploring the city. If we are delayed, then we will fly back today to Kathmandu. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner with your guide and porter.

DAY 21 – DEPARTURE
Today is a bittersweet moment as you prepare to leave the magical land of Nepal.
